University Place Tidbits
University Place is a city with a unique name. This city in Pierce County got its name from the University of Puget Sound. During the 1800s, the University of Puget Sound bought a piece of land on one of the main roads of Grandview Drive. The plan was for the University of Puget Sound to expand their campus. However, the University of Puget, or UPS, cancelled the original project and sold the land for $11,000 instead.
Now, University Place became a city of its own. According to US Census Bureau, their data indicated that in 2010, University Place had about 31,144 residents. The city, today, serves as a residential community for the most part. As a suburb, there are a number of various housing units; some are owner-occupied houses while some are rented out to tenants.
Aside from that, there are also businesses in the city. Mostly, retail sales dominate the market. University Place is known for Lefty's Burger Shack. Both residents and tourists rate it as the best burgers in town. Head over to 8317 27th St W if you want to grab a quick bite.
Another area to find cheap eats is the Frog & Kiwi Cafe. It is a place equipped with a kiddie play area. After a long day, this is your go-to place. Parents can enjoy sipping their latte while the kids enjoy playing. The Frog & Kiwi Cafe is also a nice stop for a quick break because of their delicious ice cream treats. Visit their location at 3609 Market Pl W Ste 101; it is just right next to the public library.
You may not find the University of Puget Sound here, but there are other educational institutions here such as the Charles Wright Academy. It is a college preparatory school that started in 1957. As a private institution, the Charles Wright Academy began as an all-boys school. Eventually, they became a coed school catering to both young boys and girls in 1970.
University Place has its own school district, and it currently serves 8 public schools namely: University Place Primary, Sunset Primary, Evergreen Primary, Chambers Primary, Narrows View Intermediate, Drum Intermediate, Curtis Junior and Senior High.
Before, University Place had community newspapers like the Suburban Times, the Lakewood Press, and the University Place Press. However, today, the city gets news updates from a local news website called University Place Patch. Residents also get new coverage from The News Tribune of Tacoma.
In 2000, according to US Census Bureau, the city had about 29,933 people. There were 12,684 housing units, and it is more than enough for the 12,149 households living in the city. For the 8,212 families, the family size, on average, was 2.97 members.
51.6% out of all the total households were married couples living together, and for each household, the median income was $50,287. Additionally, University Place's per capita income was $25,544. Today, with its total land area of 8.42 square miles as of 2010, University Place has a population density of 3,697.9 people per square mile.
