Steilacoom is a town of many firsts. Clara Antoinette McCarty Wilt, who became the first graduate of the University of Washington in 1876, was from Steilacoom. The Steilacoom Catholic Church, the first Catholic church in Washington, was built in Steilacoom. Having been incorporated in 1854, Steilacoom was the first incorporated town in the state. Clearly, this town may be small, but it has witnessed many important milestones in history.
Located in Pierce County, the town primarily functions as a residential community for the service men working at the nearby Joint Base Lewis McChord. The said facility in the Puget Sound area is a combination of the Fort Lewis and the McChord Air Force Base.
On 1 February 2010, the United States Army and the United States Air Force merged to create a joint base. Today, the joint base remains as a training grounds and mobilization center for all services. Its location proves to be ideal as the base is near other ports in Tacoma, Olympia, and Seattle. Plus, it is proximately situated neighboring to the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, making more strategic to deploy and airlift equipment.
In 2000, there were 1,721 families living in Steilacoom. The total population was 6,049 with a population density of 2,916.9 residents per square mile. For the 2,570 households, there were 2,674 houses. Majority of the households, 53.8 percent were married couples, and each household has around 2.35 members.
As for the 2010 data, the US Census Bureau reported that there were 5,985 people with a population density of 2,933.8 inhabitants. Moreover, 50.3 percent out of the 2,559 households were married couples. On average, each family would contain approximately 2.79 people.
The median income for each household was 46,113 USD while the per capita income for Steilacoom was 27,124 USD. From 2014 to 2018, median household income went up to 76,912 USD and the per capita income also increased to 39,913 USD. Based on per capita ranking, Steilacoom got the 61st place out of the 522 areas in Washington.
Historically, the origin of the name is still quite unclear, and there are many versions proliferating around. According to the Secretary of State website, the name of the town came from the Native American word, which means little pink flower in English.
Another version states that the fur traders, who were affiliated with the Hudson's Bay Company, named it as a nod to a Native American chief. The name of the chieftain was Tail-a-Koom so the town name eventually became Steilacoom.
However, according to the Town of Steilacoom, the town was named after the Steilacoom tribe. Primarily, the tribe used to settle near the Tacoma area, specifically on the Chambers Bay. William Bright says that the name of the village was from Southern Coast Salish, which was later anglicized as Steilacoom.
According to this fourth version, in 1824, John Work, who was the chief fur trader at the Hudson's Bay Company, named the town Chilacoom. Some people even say that the spelling was Chelakom. Whatever the origins of its name may be, Steilacoom is certainly a town that honors its indigenous roots.
