The company had basically control over this area until 1863. Old maps and journals would mention that the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, a subsidiary of Hudson's Bay Company, domesticated animals and other bovines. Cattle and sheep would fill the southern portion of the Spanueh Station and the eastern shores of the Spanueh Lake.
In the 1800s, the Native Americans could not pronounce consonants well so their Spanueh was Spadue. The term spadue means dug roots, suggesting the place where camas and other succulent root crops can be seen. Even though the native Lushootseed tribes would say it as Spadue, the people from Hudsons Bay Company continue to refer to it as Spanueh.
The first foreign settler in the area was Henry de la Bushalier, and he chose a property by the lake. In fact, he wanted to rename the lake after his namesake, but unfortunately, he died a year after. So, in 1890, the area was renamed as Lake Park.
The Lake Park Land, Railway and Improvement Company purchased the lake area and other nearby properties in order to build a planned community and construct a railway. In 1899, when Mount Rainier National Park was founded, tourists would ride the train in Lake Park, and they would journey to Mount Rainier for two straight days. This made Spanaway the original gateway to Mount Rainier!
