South Hill Tidbits
South Hill is a census-designated place that is within the Pierce County. This CDP, located directly south of Puyallup, occupies a total land area of 18.0 square miles and a small portion of 0.1 square miles is made up of water. In 2010, the population of South Hill was only 52,431 residents. However, in 2017, there around 63,000 people living in the city.
The name "South Hill" was from the area's actual location, which is the southern section of the Puyallup River valley. Also, it was named South Hill to serve as a balance to the opposite side. For those not familiar with the place, the neighboring cities of Edgewood and Milton are referred to as "North Hill."
For the most part, South Hill mainly has residential houses, apartments, condominium units, and other suburban amenities. The neighborhoods within South Hill are as follows: Manorwood, Sunrise, Lipoma Firs, Silvercreek, and Gem Heights. Plus, there are also commercial establishments like shopping centers found around Meridian Avenue.
For places to see, there are parks that are open to the public, such as Bradley Lake Park, South Hill Community Park, and Wildwood Park. Bradley Lake Park is acquired by the city in 1997, and this public park occupies an area of 59-acres, counting also the nearby 12-acre lake. Originally, the lake was a mere bog after it was utilized for peat farming. When the peat was removed and a dam was built, the lake was eventually the byproduct.
The South Hill Community Park is at 14201 - 86th Ave. E., and the 40-acre park has two soccer fields, several picnic tables, a play area for children, and foot paths connected to the South Hill Loop Trail and Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail.
In the 1850s, South Hill served as a logging, camping, and hunting grounds to the nearby military road. This is where you would pass by if you want to see towns of Kapowsin and Eatonville. When roads were further developed, residents and travelers could easily commute to other Washington cities like Tacoma, Fort Lewis, and Seattle.
According to the Census Bureau, in 2000, there were 31,623 people living in South Hill. With over 10,929 households, there were 11,398 housing units to provide shelter to its residents. In every household, there would be an average of 2.89 members. The average income per family was $64,544.
Meanwhile, in 2010, the number of residents of South Hill went up to 52,431 people. There were 19,081 housing units for the 13,990 families living in the CDP. An average family would be composed of 3.25 members. In South Hill, the average age of its residents was 33.6 years old. In 2013, American Community Survey Estimates reported that the average income per family was $87,874, and South Hill's per capita income increased to $28,201.
As for education, The Puyallup School District serves South Hill. In fact, both Governor John R. Rogers High School and Emerald Ridge High School are found in the CDP, and there are 3 middle schools within South Hill, namely Glacier View Junior High, Stahl Junior High, and Ballou Junior High. For primary education, there are public elementary schools such as Hunt Elementary, Pope Elementary, Ridgecrest Elementary, and many more.
