Ruston is a city in Pierce County that was formerly a company town of the Tacoma Smelting and Refining Company. According to the Vintage 2019 Population Estimates, Ruston has a population of 845 residents. The city experienced a population growth of 23.4 percent since the US Census Bureau 2000 data. Now, Ruston's latest population is 1,007 people.
In 2000, the Census Bureau reported that there were only 738 people living in the city. There were 355 houses to cater to 185 families. 41.8 percent out of all the 330 households were married couples, and a household would have an average size of 2.24 members.
In Ruston, majority of its population, 33.5 percent to be precise, belonged to 25 to 44 age group. This makes the median age in the city 39 years. The median income per household would be 48,393 USD while the per capita income was approximately 22,565 USD.
By 2010, there was a slight increase to 749 in terms of population. The number of housing units went up to 430, and the total number of households grew to 336. Most of its residents, in fact 43.8 percent, comprise of married couples. As for age distribution, 31.7 percent were from 45 to 64 years, making the median age 39.5 years.
In 2012, the former company town planned to become a city. The Ruston City Council passed a proposal in order to be officially recognized as a noncharter code city. Under Washington law, the local government of Ruston reclassified it as a city towards the end of the year. Even though it is technically a city now, the government officials decided to retain the Town of Ruston slogan.
The Census Bureau released a 2019 Population Estimates, they indicated that the latest population was 845. From 2014 to 2018, the median household income was 90,250 USD, and most of the residents have high educational. In fact, 95.7 percent have graduated high school graduate or even a higher degree.
Recently, the city has been through a lot of changes. Ruston transformed the copper smelting plant into a residential and commercial district. Back then, Ruston was a company town named Smelter. The Tacoma Smelting and Refining Company occupied the area when W.R. Rust formed the company town in 1890.
Now, the remnants of the smelter and its distinct properties were removed in 1993. The city has been cleaning up the site since then. This side of the city clearly has no signs of its past. Point Ruston is now its new name. Since 2017, the area has been constantly transformed as a residential and commercial center. This change is projected to bring more than 1,000 residents to Ruston.
Although it may be small compared to its neighbor Tacoma, Ruston continues to improve and build more residential complexes. It has moved on from its rich past as a company town. Now, Ruston is slowly recognized as a separate municipality. Thus, if you are looking for a city with an attractive setting, a nearby recreation, and a sprawling arts and culture, Ruston is your best bet.
