In each household, the median income was $53,464, and in the city, the per capita income was $18,951. The United States Census Bureau recorded around 6,746 people living in Orting. Also, in 2010, there were 2,184 households, and 59.5 percent out the total number of households were married couples. On average, a household would have 3.01 members.
Moreover, there were 1,688 families residing in Orting, and a typical family would contain 3.34 people. As for age distribution, most of the residents, 31.8 percent to be exact, were under the 25 to 44 years category. This makes the median age in Orting 32.7 years old.
Historically, it was in 1854 when properties were slowly claimed, and the first who applied for a claim were William Henry Whitesell, Thomas Headley, Daniel Lane, and Daniel Varner. Today, the streets in Orting are named after these four pioneers. In fact, a monument was erected on the Orting City Park commemorating them.
The early days of Orting were mainly about the logging industry and timber production. Soon, Christmas tree and bulb were grown in many farms in the area. The bulb flowers and trees were part of the growing economy of Orting. Aside from farming, Orting also supplied coals for the nearby towns of Wilkeson and Carbonado.
In 1877, the small town of Orting had its first railroad and this line was constructed by the Northern Pacific Railway. This was called Whitesells Crossing because the rail line passed through the property of William Henry Whitesell. Because the newly built railroad provided quick transportation, this exponentially increased the population of Orting.
The remaining parts of the Northern Pacific Railway eventually became part of another railroad called the Meeker Southern Railroad. Also known as MSN, was a short railroad operated by Ballard Terminal Railroad Company, and it traveled from Meeker, part of East Puyallup, until McMillin, Washington.
On April 22, 1889, Orting officially became a city. The city is fortunate to be located on a fertile land, and it was ideally located between two rivers, the Carbon River and the Puyallup River. Back then, the place was filled with lahar deposits because Orting was only 30 miles away from Mount Rainier.
Because of its proximity to Mount Rainier, scientists cited that the lahar could reach Orting in just 30 minutes. The United States Geological Survey then developed a warning device, which they named the Mount Rainier Volcano Lahar Warning System.
As an additional precaution, the city government of Orting, along with its residents, designed the Bridge for Kids, which is a walking bridge to help kids escape in any case of a natural disaster. This bridge traverses the Carbon River, and this route will eventually lead to a community south of Bonney Lake, Washington.
