Normandy Park Tidbits
Normandy Park is a city found in King County, Washington. Basing from the data of the US Census Bureau, Normandy Park had a population of 6,335 residents on April 1, 2010. By 2018, there has been a slight increase in population, which amounted to a 5.1% change.
In 2010, the United States Census Bureau cited that the city occupies a land area of 2.52. The total area is actually bigger because 4.16 square miles is made up of water. This brings the total number to 6.68 square miles with an estimated inhabitants of 2,513.9 people per square mile.
In 2018, the average income per household was $94,693, and the per capita income of the city was $54,624. Basing on per capita income alone, Normandy Park got the 31st spot among the 614 areas surveyed in Washington, which means the city is one of the affluent areas in the state.
During the middle of the 1920s, the Seattle-Tacoma Land Company was planning to develop an area purely for residential purposes.
The proposed project was to rise on the shores of Puget Sound and right in the middle of Seattle and Tacoma. The 1,200-acre project was referred as Normandy Park. Along with this development, there were also strict community rules to be followed.
The residential community was to ruinously adhere to the community guidelines and structures had to follow a French Normandy style of architecture. Plus, there were added amenities in the area such as a yacht club, a golf course, and two neighborhood beaches.
By 1929, the complete area had been finalized and interweaved together. A sufficient water system was added and deep wells are present to ensure the steady flow of water.
An exquisite clubhouse was constructed on the premiere Lot A, and in order to advertise Normandy Park, efforts were made such as offering free snacks and concerts to attract more people into the site.
The first house to be built in Normandy was a unique brick house on Lot 1, Block 20. This structure followed the plans cited by the developers, and it was built by C. S. Hughett. The address of the very first house was at 17999 Normandy Terrace SW.
Soon, other houses with a French Normandy style were also constructed plus two more Prudence Penny Budget residences.
However, due to the global economic crisis that started in 1929, this was able to put a stop to all the future plans for Normandy Park, and the Seattle-Tacoma Land Company was forced to leave the place behind.
Eventually, Ben Tipp purchased the clubhouse in 1934, and most of it was in the hands of private individuals. Moving on to the beginning of the 1950s, at this time, Normandy Park was rediscovered and houses spread like wildfire.
In a short span of time, a strong community was established. Due to this intense camaraderie of its residents, the plans to incorporate Normandy Park was approved and the city government consisted of seven council members.
Normandy Park officially became a city on June 8, 1953, and today, the city still continues to operate under the council-manager type of government. Normandy Park is surrounded by Burien on its north and Des Moines on its south.
