The second biggest city in Pierce County is Lakewood. It used to be referred to as Tacoma/Lakewood Center and Lakes District by the US Census Bureau for the 1970 and 1980 census. It was formally acknowledged as a city in 1996. People residing in the area are often called Lakewoodian.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places is the Thornewood estate. It was added to the NRHP on March 18, 1982. The estate has three buildings, including the famous Thornewood Castle, that were built using the materials from the demolished 15th century house that was imported from England. It is now a bed and breakfast place.
