The second possibility as to the origin of the town's name is that it was named by fur traders who were under the Hudson's Bay Company after a Native American chief whose name was Tail-a-Koom. In 1824 John Fork, who was a Hudson's Bay Company chief factor, called the town Chilacoom. Others also spelled it as Chelakom. However, the town claims that it was actually named after the Steilacoom tribe.
The earliest Euro-American settlement at Steilacoom was established by a sea captain from Maine named Lafayette Balch. By 1854, Steilacoom was officially recognized as a town making it the oldest incorporated town in the whole Washington state.
Aside from being the earliest incorporated town, the town is home to the Steilacoom Catholic Church, which is also the oldest church in the state. The beautiful town of Steilacoom truly is the town of firsts.
