Spanaway is situated in Pierce County and is considered by United States Census Bureau as a census-designated place. According to the census bureau, the boundaries of a census-designated place have no legal status. Since it is a CDP, the town is still unincorporated up to this day.
As per the US Census Bureau, Spanaway has a land area of 8.7 square miles in total. About 8.3 square miles is made up of land whereas only 0.04 square miles is water. In the 2010 census, there were about 27,227 people residing in Spanaway. The population density in this town is 2,592.0 per square mile.
The name of the area originated from a native Lushootseed word spadue. This term means dug roots that pertain to an area, where edible roots like camas are found. However, the Hudson Bay Company spelled the word differently, and their version of spanueh. As years passed, it eventually evolved into Spanaway which seems like an Americanized version.
One of the area's earliest settlers was Henry de la Bushalier made a claim near a lake and attempted to name the lake after him but shortly after he died, the lake was renamed by the Lake Park Land, Railway and Improvement Company as Lake Park.
The said company bought all the nearby lands and built a rail line on the shore of Spanaway Lake. By 1899, the Mount Rainier National Park was completed. The tourists who would like to visit the park would have to take a train that will lead them to Lake Park. From the Lake Park, they will go through a two-day journey to reach Mount Rainier. This is why Spanaway is also referred to as the original gateway to the majestic Mount Rainier.
Although Spanaway remains to be unincorporated, there are a lot of places you can visit within and near the town. This museum is a 1890s Gable and Wing Farm that has been renovated to represent the rich and colorful history of the town.
