Situated five miles south of Puyallup is a census-designated place called South Hill. According to the United States Census Bureau, an area labeled as a census-designated place (CDP) is not considered as an incorporated place.
During the 1990s, there was an attempt to rename the area to Southview and incorporate it as a city. The proposed name, Southview, was made to represent both South Hill and Summit View, two of the major geographical areas located in the region. However, the proposal was not approved. Up to this day, South Hill remains as a census-designated place.
The first settlers of South Hill arrived in the 1880s after a military road was built in the area. The place became a hub for logging camps, farms, and hunting grounds. As decades passed, the area is now primarily filled with residential neighborhoods, retail shopping centers, parks and recreations, and many more.
Despite South Hill not being officially established as a city, there are actually a lot of people residing in the area. As of 2017, there is an estimated population of 63000. Located in South Hill are three major parks owned and regulated by Pierce County are: South Hill Community Park, Heritage Recreation Center, and Meridian Habitat Park and Community Center.
If you are seeking for lush greenery, the South Hill Community Park is perfect for you. This 40-acre park has various amenities for all ages from a playground, two soccer fields, to a chain of paved trails. The two fields are often utilized for youth soccer, softball, and baseball programs.
One of the paved trails found in the community park is the South Hill Park Loop Trail; it is a one mile loop trail that connects to the other trail, the Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail. These two connecting trails will also lead you to a several acres of manmade wetlands.
