The City of Buckley is situated below the Mount Rainier and part of the Pierce County. The area was founded in 1882 and it was originally named as Perkin's Prairie. In 1884, the Northern Pacific Railway built a railroad coming from the Cascade Junction to Perkin's Prairie. The railroad men involved in constructing the railroad named the town White River Siding.
It was in 1887 when the name Buckley was given to the town in honor of the Northern Pacific Railway district superintendent, J.M. Buckley, and the first ever school in town was established. By 1888, Alexander and Mary Wickersham filed for a plat in the area. Lumber and shingle mills soon popped in the area which boosted Buckley's growth and development.
The following year, the District Court appointed five men to become the trustees of the Town of Buckley. It was also in 1889 when the first post office was inaugurated and the first newspaper in Buckley called The Buckley Banner was printed and published.
By the 1890, the Town of Buckley was incorporated by electorate. The Buckley Lodge and Western Star Lodge were also chartered in the same year. Two years later, the first systematized waterworks was established.
In present day, the city is continuously thriving.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the City of Buckley has a land area of 3.97 square miles in total. About 3.86 square miles is made up of land while the remaining 0.11 square miles is made up of water.
In the 2010 census, the recorded total population was 4,354 but it slightly increased to 4,994 in 2018. The population density in the city is 1,280.83 per square mile. About 51.4 percent of the total population is male while 48.6 percent is female.
As reported by the Koppen Climate Classification system, the climate in Buckley is identified as warm-summer Mediterranean climate, often abbreviated as Csb. This climate is also referred to as Cool-summer Mediterranean climate. This type of Mediterranean climate is considered as less common.
A Special Forces National Guard unit known as the Company A, 1st Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group has a detachment area in Buckley. This is one of two National Guard groups of the United States Army Special Forces. It is sometimes referred to as the 19th Group.
Buckley is known for hosting the annual two-day Log Show. One week prior to the Main Log Show, a Junior Log Show for kids is held. To kick off the celebration, a parade will go through the Main Street at 10 AM then the Log Show will officially start at noon. The Buckley Log Show is held every last full weekend of June and part of the Buckley tradition as it conserves the yesterday, celebrates the now, and embraces the tomorrow.
The City of Buckley is no stranger when it comes to the pop culture as the town was featured in the 1990 film Waiting for the Light starring Shirley MacLaine and Teri Garr. The main characters from the 1996 comedy film Black Sheep were from Buckley. Some famous personalities hailing from Buckley are Blaine Larsen who is a country music singer; Lucille Lund who was an actress; and an indie band called Fences.
