The beautiful coastal city of Des Moines is located just 20 minutes south of neighboring city, Seattle. Aside from its amazing waterfront, it is also surrounded by the majestic Mt. Rainier and the snowy peaks of the Olympic Mountain. Based on the 2010 census, the city has a population of 29,673 but it was estimated to have increased up to 32,364 in 2018.
When planning to visit Des Moines, the most pleasant months of the year are July, August, and September. The temperature ranges from 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit during these months. During July, temperature goes up as high as 77 degrees Fahrenheit whereas in January, it goes down as low as 37 degrees Fahrenheit.
Before it was incorporated as the city of Des Moines, the Europeans initially surveyed the area during the exploration of the HMS Discovery headed by British naval Captain George Vancouver on May 26, 1792.
Thirty two years later, the first Americans arrived in the region; they were part of the expedition led by Lt. Charles Wilkes. They then charted the coastline but the first ever settlers did not arrive until the late 1860s. Around 1867, John Moore, the first known settler in the area, arrived. On July 2, 1872, he was finally granted the homestead claim certificate.
Back in the days, the way of reaching Des Moines is only by water. There was a mosquito fleet that provided access to nearby cities like Seattle, Tacoma, and Vashon Island. It was not until May 1916 that Brick Highway was built. On November 13, 1916, an automobile ferry started its service from Des Moines to Portage. The city of Des Moines was officially established on June 17, 1959.
