Beyond the state capital Olympia, there are two neighboring cities, which are Lacey and Tumwater. Though smaller than Olympia, Tumwater is packed with a rich history. The community may be small, but it was established a place to live, to work, and to raise a family. In fact, Tumwater is the oldest settlement area on the Puget Sound region.
When the American settlers arrived, they initially wanted to name their town New Market. The constituents of the Bush-Simmons party sliced a wagon trail. This division eventually led them to the northern part of the Oregon Trail until the group arrived at Tumwater Falls in 1845.
However, in that same year, on the day the town was platted, it was renamed to Tumwater. The new name means waterfall in English, and it came from Chinook Jargon, which was based from Chinook language. By 1863, the newly established town had a post office.
Six year later, on November 25, 1869, Tumwater got upgraded as a fourth class town. Finally, in 1875, Tumwater was officially incorporated as a city. Fast forward to 1994, it was the time when the City Council decided follow a Mayor-Council type of government.
In a Mayor-Council form, seven council members are voted by the residents of Tumwater and each of them has a four-year term. The mayor has administrative authority while the powers to create policies are given to the city council.
Today, Tumwater continues to grow its city limits. The Urban Growth Area (UGA) covers the eastern portion Black Lake until the western section of Chambers Creek. For the northern region, Tumwater shares the area with Olympia. Then, it goes down until 93rd Avenue SE. As of 2010, Tumwater occupies a land area of 14.32 square mile.
Tumwater can be reached through various transportation solutions. The city urges locals and tourists to reduce road congestion by utilizing the public transportation, cycling, or even walking through the system of connected trails.

There are also passenger trains available, and these trains are managed by Amtrak. The routes run from key areas such as the Lacey Centennial Station, Portland, Seattle, and other connected cities. Despite the changes it experienced, Tumwater is still true to its core. The city still maintains a small town vibe yet it keep that pioneering spirit alive.
On November 25, 2019, Tumwater just celebrated its 150th founding anniversary. It was in 1869 when Tumwater was first recognized as a fourth class town. To celebrate this special moment, everyone was invited to gather at the Tumwater City Hall by 5:30 in the afternoon.
Since the incorporation of Tumwater, the city has grown to be a diverse community with developing neighborhoods, lively commercial areas, and a bustling manufacturing industry.
