Steilacoom may just be another bedroom community for many, but the town has witnessed many firsts in history. First on the list, Steilacoom became the first town in Washington to be incorporated. It was officially recognized as a town in 1854. Second, the first jail in Washington was actually in Steilacoom.
Built in 1855, one year after its incorporation, the Steilacoom Catholic Church was constructed. It was named as the Church of the Immaculate Conception, and it became the first Catholic church in the state. Because it was first of its kind, in 1974, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
When you think it's over, it is not. Apart from being the first incorporated community in Washington, the first person to graduate from the University of Washington was actually a citizen of Steilacoom. Clara Antoinette McCarty Wilt, who graduated in 1876, was born in Steilacoom.
One may think that since the town has witnessed many significant events of the past, Steilacoom may come off as archaic. However, it is not; based on per capita income alone, Steilacoom seems a progressive place because it got the 61st spot out of all the 522 areas in Washington.
Steilacoom grew to become a residential community for the service crew and members, who are working at the nearby joint Army-Air Force base. The Joint Base Lewis-McChord is located 9.1 miles away from Tacoma, Washington. This U.S. Military base is a combination of the United States Army's Fort Lewis and the United States Air Force's McChord Air Force. The two joined forces on 1 February 2010 as part of a commission recommendation signed in 2005.
Lafayette Balch, a sea captain from Maine, was the person who initiated the European-American settlement in the area. Because Steilacoom was the oldest incorporated town, it has four structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Aside from that, there is also the Steilacoom Historic District, which contributed 68 properties to the list.
The early economy of Steilacoom was thanks to the exportation and production of lumber. Various sawmills would cut logs into processed lumber, and the final products would be sent to San Francisco, California. When Washington was recognized as a state on March 2, 1853, Governor Isaac Stevens ordered Steilacoom to be the administrative center of Pierce County.
Eventually, other areas near Steilacoom developed, and one particular example is the City of Lakewood. The city has flourished next to Steilacoom, and it is the location of one major state-run mental health facility, the Western State Hospital. The hospital is currently located at 9601 Steilacoom Boulevard SW in Lakewood, Washington, which was the original location of Fort Steilacoom.
Since there are no state highways directly passing through Steilacoom, commuters can go to Steilacoom through the nearby Lakewood. Furthermore, Steilacoom can be accessed using the Interstate 5 or State Route 512. Currently, the Washington State Department of Transportation is planning to build a passenger service for those interested to quickly access Steilacoom.
This inland route will run through Lakewood. As of January 2020, the Point Defiance Bypass project is currently working on complying with the necessary requirements. Amtrak will have to work closely with Sound Transit to address the given recommendations.
