The Hudson's Bay Company created at Fort Nisqually, which is NW of Dupont. Therefore, with this trading post, the Hudson's Bay Company practically governed the region. Their company records showed that a subsidiary, which is the Puget Sound Agricultural Company, raised bovine animals at the Spanueh Station. There were cows, sheeps, and other mammals occupying the shores of Spanueh Lake.
Spanueh is the Hudson Bay Company's way of saying the native term spadue. Originally, spadue came from the Lushootseed tribe, and this meant "dug roots." A hint on where camas and other root crops are found. The Lushootseed people had problems with consonants back in the days. Thus, the "Spanueh" was "Spadue" to them.
Eventually, the "Spanueh" was adopted to the American way of speaking, and that was how the name Spanaway was born. The first recorded settler in Spanaway was Henry de la Bushalier. He tried to claim a property by the lake, and he even wanted to rename the lake. Unfortunately, he died so the area was named as "Lake Park."
When the Mount Rainier National Park opened in 1899, the Lake Park Land, Railway and Improvement Company benefited from this new development. The tourists would use the rail line in Lake Park and they would journey for two days going to Mount Rainier. This made Spanaway the first gateway to Mount Rainier.
The U.S. Board on Geographic Names did acknowledge the Lake Park as a community in 1897, but they had to take it back because the people would still use the old Spanueh name. The CDP may seem uneventful, but Spanaway is mentioned often in pop culture references. First, the band Neko Case cites Spanaway in their song, The Needle Has Landed. Next, a band called The Movielife came up with a song entitled Spanaway. Moreover, Seaweed, a pop rock band from Tacoma, released a studio album called Spanaway.
Spanaway Park, located at 14905 Bresemann Blvd. South, is 135-acre park offers numerous activities such as fishing, swimming, and water sports. There is also a boat launch area and a boat ramp if you are bringing your own gear. If not, there are rentals for basic equipment like canoes and paddle boats at the boathouse.
Spanaway Park can function as a family area as well. If you do not fancy aquatic recreation, there are picnic areas and a play area for kids. The five picnic shelters have access to water, electricity, and cooking tools. Moreover, the Spanaway Park provides open areas for games like softball, basketball, and other similar sports.
