Since 2012, Ruston has been reclassified as a city. Before this, Ruston used to be a company town. Then, after, Ruston became a separate municipality, depending on no one. The city may be unnoticeable compared to its larger neighbor Tacoma, but Ruston has a lot to offer especially for families looking for a new home. According to the 2010 census, the population in the city was 749 residents.
Its history started in 1890 when W.R. Rust founded the Tacoma Smelting & Refining Company, and this was his effort of building a community for his employees. The company town was supposed to be named "Smelter."
However, the residents decided that it is only fitting to dedicate it after in honor of W.R. Rust. On October 22, 1906, the people of the company town unanimously voted to rename their community to Ruston. By November of the same year, Ruston officially became a town in Pierce County.
The Commencement Bay surrounds it one side, giving the residents a waterfront view every time they look out the window. Meanwhile, on the other side, Ruston is surrounded by Tacoma. For many years, Ruston was the base of the ASARCO LLC. The American Smelting and Refining Company is a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico since 1999, and it is a known mining, smelting, and refining company established in Arizona.
However, during the 1990s, the smelter ceased operations. The plant and other related landmarks were demolished in 1993. There was a massive cleanup to remove the remnants of the smelting operations. Eventually, the area was revamped into a mix of residential and commercial establishments.
Since then, this side of the city was renamed to "Point Ruston." Ruston decided to renovate the former smelting plant in order to add more than 1,000 residents to the city. In addition, the city council passed a measure for Ruston to become a noncharter code city. In 2012, under Washington law, it was enacted and Ruston was recognized as a city. However, the city officials chose to retain the "Town of Ruston" tag.
Point Ruston, located at 5219 N. Shirley St. Ruston, contains commercial & retail stores, condominiums, and apartments. It is only a few minutes away from Downtown Tacoma. Living in Point Ruston will give you the best of both worlds. You get to easily access the nearby key cities and you will also have panoramic views of the Commencement Bay as well.
Aside from that, Point Ruston offers waterfront condominiums and apartments. It is the ideal destination in the Pacific Northwest region with a glimpse of the Cascade foothills, Mt. Rainier, and Olympic Mountains. Moreover, there are beautiful parks within the city limits, and you get to access more than 50 acres of open vistas.
If you are planning to stay a while, in this urban village, there also a bunch of housing options and numerous hotels available such as the Silver Cloud hotel. Through Point Ruston, you will discover that Ruston has everything you need especially if you are starting a family. From casual dining, boutiques, to specialty stores, the Point Ruston area can offer you all that... and more!
