Historically, the humble beginnings of in Orting started in 1854. The first residents were William Henry Whitesell, Thomas Headley, Daniel Lane and Daniel Varner. These four people were known as the forefathers of Orting. In fact, the street names were derived from these pioneers. There's even a monument built in their honor at the Orting City Park.
On April 22, 1889, Sumner was incorporated, and William Henry Whitesell became the first postmaster. The early economy in Orting were credited to farming, logging, and hops production. After selling fresh produce, the city explored growing various bulb flowers. The farms would plant bulb flowers and Christmas to ship to others areas, and this would be a significant part of Orting's local economy.
Aside from blooming bulbs, Orting was known for supplying coals for the nearby towns such as Wilkeson and Carbonado. In 1877, Orting had its first railroad, and it was named "Whitesell's Crossing" because the railroad would pass through the property of William Henry Whitesell.
After the construction of the Whitesell's Crossing, population quickly surged as it was able to provide easy access to and from the city. Today, the original railroad is part of the Meeker Southern Railroad, which would follow a short route from East Puyallup to McMillin, Washtingon.
The Washington Soldiers Home, situated on southwest of the city, is a medical facility for US veterans and their respective families. Specifically located on the Orting Kapowsin Highway, the Washington Soldiers Home offers nursing care, personal care, and other medical needs of these war heroes.
For the city parks, Orting is known for the various murals scattered around the city. Moreover, picnic areas are common on the historic downtown side of the city. Here some of the parks you can visit: Three Corner Park, Calistoga Park, Charter Park, Gratzer Sports Park, Main City Park, Memorial Park, North Park, Rainier Meadows Park, Triangle Park, Whitehawk Park, and Williams Park.
Main City Park is the prime park of the city, which is located on the downtown area. The community park is just right off of Orting's Main Street. The Main City Park is divided into two sections: the first one has the play area for kids, which includes swing sets, horseshoe pits, picnic areas, and benches. Amenities on this side are available for reservations so be sure to check out 101 Train St SE.
Meanwhile, the second section, over at 102 Train St SE, is the basketball area. There are also benches, tree carvings, and an open gazebo area. Many events of the city happen in this specific section, and this area can be rented as well for family gatherings.
Lastly, Orting is also part of the annual Daffodil Festival Parade. After Tacoma, Puyallup, and Sumner, Orting is the final stop so don't miss this chance whenever you visit Orting during April.
