Olympia Tidbits
Olympia is the state capital of Washington, and it is the administrative center of Thurston County. Euro-American settlers came to the area in the 1840s, and the first resident at the future location of Olympia was Thomas K Otchin, who was Hudson Bay Company employee from Europe. He claimed a piece of land in 1841, but eventually abandoned the property by 1842.
Early settlers were drawn to Olympia because of the potential hydropower provided by the nearby Tumwater Falls. The area was near the established town of "New Market," which is now Tumwater. Back when water transportation was the quickest way to travel from one place to another, Olympia proved to be ideal because it lies on the northern end.
Soon, Olympia became the main intersection for regional trade. In 1846, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Lathrop Smith claimed the land, which is now part of downtown Olympia. Levi Lathrop Smith built a cabin on a 2-acre property on the present location of Capitol Way and Olympia Avenue.
At this time, the Hudson's Bay Company conquered the region by building a fur trading post. The company also brought the French Catholic missionaries. In 1848, the Mission St. Joseph was able to establish a school at Priest Point.
In 1848, Smith became a representative to the Oregon Provisional Legislature. Unfortunately, in the same year, he drowned. Because of Smith's sudden death, all his properties were handed to Sylvester. He was sole owner of the future townsite now, and when Edmund Sylvester filed for a town plat, the suggested names for the town were "Smithfield" and "Smithter" as a way to commemorate Levi Lathrop Smith.
However, in 1853, the town was named Olympia, which was a suggestion of Isaac N. Ebey. The resident thought of this suggestion because the town provides an unhampered view of the Olympic Mountains on the northwest direction.
In 1851, when the U.S. Congress formed the Customs District of Puget Sound, Olympia was the official port of entry, mandating all incoming ships to head to Olympia first. The following year, in 1852, Olympia was officially named the county seat of Thurston County.
By 1853, Ezra Meeker, who was the first mayor of Puyallup, Washington, mentioned that Olympia had about 100 residents. It already had a hotel, a stable, a tavern, a weekly newspaper called The Columbian, and 3 other stores.
Daniel Bigelow became the representative of Thurston County during the first three legislatures. His house is currently the oldest surviving residence in Olympia. The house now function as the Bigelow House Museum, which is at 918 Glass Ave NE.
The Daniel R. Bigelow House is now a dedicated museum, which aims to preserve the early history of Olympia and Washington. Being the oldest structure, the Bigelow House was constructed in the 1850S. Several descendants of Daniel R. Bigelow maintained the house, and would welcome anyone interested in the history of Olympia. The last generation lived in the Bigelow House until 2005.
The Bigelow House follows a Carpenter Gothic style, which was the popular architectural style in the mid-1800s. The family preserved the house's historic furnishings. On the walls, numerous documents and artifacts are displayed, representing more than 150 years of Olympia's rich history.
