The history of Milton starting during the 1890s when a sawmill was constructed among tall and viridian trees. Lush evergreens filled the hills of the Puyallup Valley. The first community in the area was known as "Mill Town," and the early settlers were mainly composed of the lumber workers, who worked at the lumber mill.
However, the US Postal Service rejected the proposed name. Hence, instead of using the two-word Mill Town, the name was changed to Milton. Aside from that, Washington officials stated that there was already a settlement area carrying the name Mill Town. Surprisingly, the residents did not dispute the name change. They were actually happy with the renaming because their town will now be named after John Milton, who is a renowned English poet during the Renaissance period.
The 1900s came with new developments for Milton. Interurban Railway constructed a line that included Milton. The new transportation means really helped connect Milton to Seattle and Tacoma, and this made the town prospered even further. Shortly after, in 1903, the first public school in Milton was established.
The Milton Land Company designed plans for the community and submitted a town plat. At this time, the property in Milton were sold for as low as $29 an acre. By 1905, Milton had its first post office with 98354 as their ZIP code.
Two years later, in 1907, Milton was incorporated as a city. The results were official when residents unanimously voted in favor of its incorporation. As Milton grew into a bigger community, it slowly freed itself from the logging industry. Then, Milton was transformed into a bedroom community for the surrounding cities.
People, who commuted to Tacoma for work, decided to settle in Milton since it is proximately located near the city. The same thing happened for the cities with larger populations such as Federal Way and Puyallup, the smaller cities of Fife, Milton, and Edgewood became its residential community.
By the 1930s, Milton started to power its own city. Having an electric power became a unique selling point for Milton. Later, the city experienced tremendous growth when a sewer project was completed in 1971. The 1.8 million-dollar project paved the way for geographic and economic success in Milton.
According to the 2010 census data, there were 6,968 people residing in Milton. There were 3,081 houses to accommodate the 1,834 families, and each family, on average, would be composed of 2.95 members.
As for the living arrangements, there were 2,901 households in total, and 44.5 percent of this number were married couples, having an average household size of 2.40. The reported median age in 2010 was 36.7 years. Moreover, 28.9 percent of the total population belonged to the 25-44 age group.
Today, Milton has retained its small town vibe. A peaceful community that is just ten minutes away from Tacoma. If you need some quiet time, then, Milton can provide you with open vistas, trees, and gardens. It offers quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy cities. So, do not hesitate to explore Milton because it will greet you with its picturesque scenery and exceptional charm.
