Maple Valley Tidbits
The City of Maple Valley was incorporated on August 31, 1997. Because Maple Valley is just 5.8 square miles away from Kent, Covington, and Black Diamond, it served as a bedroom community for these key cities in Washington. Aside from that, Maple Valley is near to Seattle and Tacoma too. A mere 30-minute drive from Maple Valley will lead you to the east of Seattle.
Originally, the area was supposed to be a hiking trail. In 1879, three men explored areas in order develop a trail, but they developed a community instead. These men brought their families with them, and soon, a new town was born. The town names proposed were Vine Maple Valley and Maple Ridge.
The name Vine Maple Valley was chosen by the two-thirds of the voters. However, the post office had to shorten it to only Maple Valley because the name was already long. The town's humble beginnings can be traced back to coal mining and lumber milling. When more residents started pouring in Maple Valley, the demand for lumber also went up, meaning more work opportunities.
By the 1920s, Maple Valley became known for its resorts. The lumber mills eventually became a resort lake called Gaffney's Grove, which had cabins, a golf course, and wide open spaces. Because of the growing number of cars, new roads had to be built. During the 1960s, Maple Valley had a major revamped to accommodate the State Route 18.
The Maple Valley Historical Society still keep old photographs of Maple Valley including that of Gaffney's Grove. Inevitably, the Gaffney's Lake Wilderness Lodge has been a huge part of Maple Valley's rich past. That is why in 2003 it was listed as on the National Register of Historic Places.
New attractions were to the former location of Gaffney's Grove like the Lake Wilderness City Park. In January 2003, Maple Valley acquired the Lake Wilderness, a 117-acre regional park filled with forestland and hiking trails. The park includes three wetlands, making in an ideal spot for bird watching. A variety of birds consider Lake Wilderness as their haven.
The Lake Wilderness City Park has a beach and a sprawling grass fields for everyone to use. Every year, in June, the Maple Valley Days Parade happen at this city park. Aside from beaches, trails, and open fields, the Lake Wilderness Arboretum is found within the Lake Wilderness property.
The Lake Wilderness Arboretum is a 40-acre garden that started out as a nonprofit organization back in the 1970s. Before 2003, it was called as the South King County Arboretum. Found near the Lake Wilderness Trail, this botanical garden is open to the public and free of charge. The Lake Wilderness Arboretum is proud to house more than 200 selections of the Western Azalea species, making it one of biggest collections in the world.
In 2018, Maple Valley's population was estimated to be 27,114, and the average income per household was $107,299. Based on the city's per capita income of $39,613, Maple Valley got the 93rd spot out of all the 522 Washington areas surveyed.
