Situated between Olympia and the Nisqually River is a city called Lacey. With a 2010 population of 42,393 people, Lacey acts as a suburb of Olympia. The city can be accessed through Interstate 5. Lacey has a one sister city, and that is Minsk Mazowiecki, Poland.
Originally, Lacey was named Woodland after its earliest settlers. The couple Isaac and Catherine Wood claimed a property in 1853. Woodland had a number of residents already, and it was ready to apply for a post office. However, the request to name it Woodland was denied because a town on the Columbia River already used the same name.
The town had to choose a new name for post office application. Many assumed that Lacey was derived from the name O. C. Lacey, who was known as the Justice of the Peace. During the 1950s, the towns of Woodland and Chambers Prairie combined into one, renaming the newly established city as Lacey. However, Lacey was officially recognized as a city until 1966.
At this point, the main industries that powered the local economy of Lacey were the domestication of bovine animals, the production of milk, lumber, and other forest products.
