Gig Harbor Tidbits
Gig Harbor is a city located in Pierce County on the scenic Puget Sound bay, and across Tacoma Narrows. Its history is like an intricate tapestry as settlers developed the farms, fishing, ferries, steamboats, and bridges. According to the latest statistics, the city has a population of 7,126.
The city got its name during a heavy storm. It was in 1840 when Captain Charles Wilkes decided to bring his gig, a term for small boat, to the harbor for safety. Later on, when the Wilkes published the 1841 map, he called the place Gig Harbor.
It was in 1867 when Samuel Jerisich, a fisherman, came to the city with Peter Goldsmith and John Farrague. There were also other immigrants from Croatia, Norway, and Sweden. Stories had it that the three men glided to the bay to pass the night. There were also accounts that said that the strong storm blew them away.
Whatever the story is, all these people decided to stay. The three fishermen were the founders of the place that eventually became the City of Gig Harbor. In 1888, Alfred M. Burnham made a map of the town.
On July 12, 1946, Gig Harbor was formally incorporated. Its economy depended on boat building, commercial fishing up until 1940, when the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge was built. Before this, the main way of transportation going to Tacoma was by steamships.
In 1836, it was when steamships started to sail the waters of Puget Sound, and swiftly created what was known as "Mosquito Fleet." The city was separated from Seattle and Tacoma through Tacoma Narrows and Puget Sound.
After the Tacoma Narrows Bridge fell down, a temporary ferry service had to bring people to and from the city. People would be sent straight to the downtown of Gig Harbor. Remnants of the ferry dock can be seen to this day. Now, aside from the memories of the old Gig Harbor, the dock has a little park, where people can see the beautiful view provided by Mount Rainier, and the Cascade Mountains.
When the replacement bridge was finished in 1950, there came a swift development. Residential areas multiplied as families preferred the seafront view nearer the Gig Harbor Peninsula. The summer cabins became the main homes for folks who travelled everyday over the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Eventually, Gig Harbor came to a decision to add the areas around the countryside areas and transform them to residential and commercial districts. However, the city government made sure that there will be no aggressive change when it comes to the historic downtown in order to preserve its history and charm.
Up to this day, Gig Harbor is still a place where tourist can dine, shop, and enjoy. The unique selling point of the city is its historic downtown, and its rich past that is very evident in every street.
The city was able to acquire the Glein/Eddon/Gig Harbor boatyard after being uninhabited for quite some time now. Gig Harbor plans to turn the place into a seafront museum for locals and tourists alike.
